You have a N52 motor?
Both the coolant and oil flow through the Oil Filter Housing. The seal prevents one from mixing with the other and/or leaking to the outside.
But, if not installed properly, you can cause a ripple in the gasket that will allow oil and/or coolant to start mixing.
If you open/unscrew the coolant lid and find a oily foam substance, then you have the two mixing at some point.
