New observation I just found out. If you are in sport mode or activate sprint mode and want to have some aggressive fast shifts up to red line, the benign thump is now a loud bang. The bang only happens on the up shift only

thats a deliberate wide open upshift "fart". The thump those folks are talking about is something totally different.
