I’ve had both. The M440i is actually a fabulous car. Supreme daily, with all the amenities and performance for that use case that you could want. I’d actually take it over an M240i as I too prefer the looks of the bigger car.
Financially, it’s the wrong move. An M440i optioned to provide a better experience than a 2-Series will cost more than an M2, which is unfathomable and untenable to me. The M440i will depreciate much faster than either the M240i or M2. The only plus is that you can probably get 10% off the MSRP of an in-stock M440i.
The performance delta between the M440i and M2 is massive. Much faster past 30mph (the B58 does great off the line), with significantly better handling. Way flatter cornering, way more grip. My subjective opinion is that the M2 looks significantly better and more special, especially in Zandvoort Blue.
If you need a car right away, your decision is already made for you. The M2 is absolutely worth the wait.
