So at least for me when I went thru this in CA 18 months ago, totaled my e34 one night with some debris on the freeway. If it was on the ground (regardless of stationary or not) it would be a collision claim. If it was flying in the air, it was comprehensive.
So say a car wheel is rolling across the freeway and you hit it, that would be a collision claim. If the truck in front of you drops a wheel out of the bed, it bounces and hits your fender while in the air, that is comprehensive.
In OP's case, it must have been in the air when his vehicle collided with the object. If it was a big rock on the ground it would have damaged the whole underside
