I remember 1-series cars overall being too "quirky looking" and it turned off a lot of people at the time. It didn't gather the mainstream appeal BMW wanted, which is why the 1 series was discontinued. Can't blame BMW for giving up on the smaller cars. After all, they bought Mini to sell into that market.
I liked the 135i personally (never got a chance to drive a 1M), but I don't think it sold well.
