Less torque-y down low with a manual doesn't mean you
have to downshift, it means you
get to downshift.
I drove an E90 M3 for many years. The S65's peak torque of 295 lb-ft was at 3,900 rpm. Never once felt like it was lacking in power because I kept it in the right place in the power band for the given situation. Plus it made a glorious noise at high rpm.
If your dream is to own a manual M car then I think you'll be very happy with the G87. You will
want to downshift and you will
want to rev it out. You'll be cruising down the highway in 6th and come upon a car you want to overtake. You could stay in 6th and easily pass, OR you can drop it down to third, pass, and work back through the gears to 6th.
In other words, low end torque doesn't matter if you are higher in the rev range.
