If you’re only doing it WHILE you work on the terminals, nothing bad will happen. As mentioned, you don’t NEED to do it. But you’ll be fine.
Just don’t leave it unplugged while you travel.
Think of it as a battery swap. You need to unplug it and everything is fine after that.
