Could be so many things, front control arms, torque struts ,,giubo. You need to get the car in the air and if it has over 100,000 miles replacing the front suspension me be a a given. You can do it yourself for under $600 with OE quality parts. The giubo and Center bearing is not too difficult either. You will need to remove the exhaust and heat shields. If you need your driveshaft rebuilt that could cost you around $500 I believe.. Please search and read before throwing parts at it. If you don't know how to wrench it's going to be a very expensive car for you. You can Learn however.
There are a ton of posts including stickies on this forum from all of us OG's A-to-Z on the 335d and X5d M57. Search is your friend. you will find everything you ever wanted to and maybe not wanted to

Actually, it's a great platform/engine and my wife's X5d is coming up on 236,000 miles. The most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, and we have owned many. It doesn't know the alphabet, which is why it has been so terrific. Same with my d. You can have all the power you want and still get over 30 miles per gallon with your d.
