Nikki is spot on.
September and early October are similar to the climate in Northern California during the winter. (I went to School in Northern California.
There are days that are warm that you will have no problem walking around in flops and a tank top (these days are few however), and then there will be days that you will need a light jacket, and a sweater/sweatshirt, because it will be cold and rainey.
There are always Indian Summer days in the Fall which are amazing especially in Central Park. The leaves will all have changed color and you can walk around in shorts. Obviously bring jeans and close toe shoes. You won't need real warm cloths until mid to late October.
That being said, even in the winter there will be freakishly warm days. Last February I was walking around Central Park in shorts for an entire weekend.
