So I ended up caving and buying a Polygon Siskiu T8 full suspension with the BF deals going on. It was approx $1650 USD ($2250CAD) before tax. Only downside I've noticed is that it's 35 lbs but that's expected with budget bikes.
Haven't been able to get onto the trails yet, but it handles roads well.
