Even with the flawed methodology of testing only one random non-touchscreen car, that test confirms that drivers can be nearly as fast with simple touchscreen UIs as they are with the hard button interface of that one Volvo.
A better test design would pit the touchscreen cars against each of their immediate predecessors. iDrive 8 vs. 7 is far more informative than iDrive 8 vs. 2005 Volvo. Additionally, a breakdown of times for each sub-test should be disclosed. If all the time is lost on the screen brightness sub-test, but they were neck and neck on climate control, that’s important to know. Also important to know is how much time the drivers were given to learn the 11 UIs. How old were the drivers? That test design and published results leave things to be desired.
