Don't just look at the monthly payment, but your total cash outlay over the term. You're right though, there isn't much incentive to lease over a M340i. If you look at the buy option, there's maybe $10k between a well optioned M240i and M340i.
My guess is that the GC FWD 2-Series is the bargain basement sedan option now, while the RWD 2-Series won't be much cheaper to the 3/4 and will be marketed as being a bit smaller vs. being entry level.
