They better not get rid of the controller. Touch screens suck for driving, gesture control is a PITA and goes off when you don't want it too.
Cadillac for years went down that route and it was a gong show.
The intuitive way that rotary controller works is great plus you can use it with gloves on in the winter without any issue.
BMW engineering needs to give their collective heads a shake.
