Ideally both, but at the same time - I daily drive my car.. Also live in a townhouse, so don't want to bother my neighbors with volume.
Also, I don't really enjoy raspy exhaust notes. I like deeper smooth tones, but with a bit more noise.
I am definitely not knocking downpipes. For my particular preferences, the performance gain is not worth the sound they emit.
