At one time they were… highly exclusive when it was the E28 M5, E24 M6, and E30 M3.
Let's think about that for a minute.

E28:

• M535i (M "Lite") was offered from 1985 - on along with the…
• M5 (M88/3) was almost called the M535Si to avoid confusion with the lower performance M5 (S38), but a certain Bob didn't think 4 door cars could be marketed as "sporty".

E24:

• M6 (S38) was the "M-Lite" with the smaller designation to avoid confusion with the…
• Higher performance "Full M" M635CSi (M88/3)

E30:

• 320iS was S14 powered with a dogleg gearbox (somewhat of a reverse M Lite)
• M325i was a real model
• There were numerous M-Tech special models with various names available unless you were in the US.
• M3 didn't have M mirrors nor a Hoffmeister Kink

The list goes on and on.
