Save for a couple models like the 3, 5, and X3; all the G-chassis models have some weird ass styling quirks. Overall they still look good, but I miss clean designs. It's just a sign of the times, you either set trends or you fall behind.

I bet you are right. That would be why the 220d doesn't have them and the M240i does.

I wonder if they can just be "peeled off"?
Possibly, hard to tell. The ones on the M2s currently are screwed in under the arch so it's a hefty bit of plastic (not just what you see). They also have their edges covered with PPF. Right git to remove, but doable
