To me, the M2 is more so a better and smaller version of the M3/4. I think giving it a different or special engine and changing some of the characteristics of the car would really benefit it. Like an M2 with a higher revving naturally aspirated I6 would be awesome in its compact packaging. Kind of going back to the Bangle days where each car had their own character. The 1M had a Twin-Turbo I6 in a small body, the M3 an awesome NA V8, and the M5 a screaming glorious V10. The M2 is a bit too much M3/4, in both the good and bad.
Although the idea is appealing, they no longer free the funds for such differentiation. With EV pushing hard, we'll probably see a rapid decrease in ICE choices.

Besides that, I believe that the width of the abilities of the S58 is beyond believe! As from the dig uptil red line it's strong, gutsy and is immediately 'scalable' to make it a perfect fit in every occasion. The S63 has this same universal capability. Both engines made me wonder, what's left to desire? Until today, I wouldn't really know.
They're not bad engines, although to me the S63 isn't my favorite V8 available, I just think it would be cooler and different for them to make the M cars more different in personality than each other. The M2 could be so much more than "just" another smaller M3 if you know what I mean. Also with the amount of SUV's they sell, they 100% have the funds to do a lot of different projects.
