Oil Level Low
Hey guys, on my way home my service indicator showed that my oil level is at minimum.
Its weird because i got an oil change like 5 months ago. Anyways should I just go to the dealer and grab a couple of quarts of BMW oil and top it up? and will the computer automatically weigh how much is in there and reset it self? |

low oil light means it is one quart down. Just add a quart of whatever oil you are using. It's not unusual for bmw engines to use some oil between changes. Some don't, some use a lot, looks like you got one of the in-between ones!

I would add a quarter quart and see what the level is..still low?? Add another 1/4 qt.
You really don't want to over fill....

^^^ Pappy is 100% on this, mine showed 1qt low but I added 1/2 qt. and it was showing full again, if I would of added the FULL Qt. I would of been overfilled by 1/2 Qt.

You never want to overfill a car with oil so adding oil should always be done with some caution. The manual describes when and how much to add. These cars do consume some oil so you should not have much to worry about but I would take a peak and look for any potential oil leaks

and they say that we don't need the dipstick. A $10 part would resolve this issue.

Sorry to bring up an old thread- but did this happen to you totally out of the blue? Aka no warning before it hit you with a message saying something to the effect of "don't drive further or you might damage the engine"?
This has happened to me twice and it's infuriating. The first time I had to walk to a gas station that luckily had some nice Castrol synthetic in the correct weight for this car, and the second time I still had some Castrol left over from the first time. Hate to think what I'd do if this happened to me in the middle of nowhere. I would think it's supposed to give you a warning when the oil level starts nearing MIN but not quite there yet, but to me it's only given me the warning when it's too late. |

The low oil level message is not an indication that the car cannot be driven; it is a message that states to add oil at the next available time but before 120 miles has passed. For most people that means there is ample time to add 1 quart of oil. |
