It’s not a bad choice for a DIYer who prefers older cars, but I generally would not recommend a 20 year old car as a daily driver to a normal person unless it is a really goodj deal and the person has a convenient, honest, local independent shop to depend on.

I know. I received some good private messages as well showing me the pros and cons of this thing. I just don’t think I’m cut out for the grind of things failing. It’s a great car for someone handy which I am really not under the hood

With two young children I’m responsible for- I need something newer that will not be in the shop as this needs to be my primary car. Consider the dream on hold. Thank you all for your ideas. |

BWMs are good cars with a little more performance feel if buying a performance or sport model. The current turbo 4 and 6 are good and reliable motors. I have BMW and Porsche but you pay a premium to buy, a premium to service, a premium for parts, and a premium for gas. I recommend Toyota and Lexus to most people, especially those concerned about maintenance and repair costs. They are better cars than the more pedestrian BMWs in my opinion. |

That's probably a good idea. Sometimes there's nothing you can do and other people crash into you. My wife had a girl in a corolla.spin.out into her, she was stopped at a red light and this girl lost control going around a very slight turn and ran into the side of our car. There was nothing my wife could have done to avoid it. We were lucky, some people get hit HARD by drugged out or drunk or distracted drivers and aren't as lucky.
BMWs have been focused on safety since the early 00s, but that's also an area that has made big strides since the early 00s. If you found something in a 2010ish X5, it'd be significantly safer vs that early X3. |

Honestly that was the biggest thing that drove me to get my X5. I have a trailblazer ss as well, and despite being an 09 and having rear side curtain airbags, I also have two little ones. The idea of someone hitting us and them being hurt because I wanted to drive my old paid for truck really got to me.

Big vehicles are pretty good for the occupants, but harmful to others on the road when they cause the accident. Plenty of studies on this, not that the drivers of 6000 lb vehicles care about anyone else.

That's just life. Nobdy cares about people they don't know more than their family. You'd be a terrible parent if you didnt do everything in your power to protect your family. It's not unreasonable to expect other people to do the same.

Humans and Americans are better than most. They don't go out of their way to remove competition, in most cases. Nobody out there thinks "I'm gonna buy an SUV so if we get in an accident the other people die". But it's absolutely acceptable and frankly, it's only smart and good parenting to take opportunities you have to better protect your family. As parents, we try to give our kids the best opportunities that we can. We send them to good schools, we give them safe loving homes, we try to teach them life lessons so they don't have to learn them the hard way. It's unreasonable to say that buying a large vehicle to protect you family is anything negative. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I would buy aiteral tank to drive my kids around in if I knew it was safer for them and I could. |

Even my rental at the moment has rear side impact airbags and head airbags. I think as we get older we get a sense of what is important. |

If anything- rural America might be safer because there are less cars on a certain road. Regardless of mental capacity- maybe people are preoccupied in their minds. I like I have stop and go auto ACC on the car I’m renting now. Just to help me focus. I like the old cars- but new tech could help save yourself from an accident. Accident avoidance warning on new bmws is clever and helpful. |

And then you think about the alertness and skills of the typical American driver in their 6000 lb SUV or pickup …. They need all the driver assistance help they can get. The side benefit is it often protects the rest of us from them.
