I pulled the tape off and the wiring is twisted together. But it has definitely been snapped in the past and looks as though whoever had it just tried to twist it together and then taped it.

Assuming your pins are fine on your new mechatronic, it seems like you might've found the issue on your gear shift assembly? Maybe try splicing those wires to see if it fixes your issue and then pick up a shift assembly from a junk yard.
