I took my G42 M240i roll racing on Saturday
Sorry for the large photos. I have no idea how to reduce their size. There is text in between all of them.
On Friday I drove through 5 hours of NYC traffic to make it to the Poconos in Pennsylvania for the RaceMotive Roll Race event on Saturday. For those of you who aren't familiar, this is a roll race that occurs on the Nascar track at Pocono Raceway. From staging you accelerate up to a max speed of 65.99 and once you hit the green cones you floor it for 1700 feet. At the end your speed is measured and you shut down. This was my first time at one of these events. It was a bucket list thing for me, and now I'm addicted. I can't wait for the spring event. I was one of the first people to tech in during the event. You'll see some photos before the event started and during the parade lap where my car has yellow stickers on it. Later on you'll see photos of a purple sticker on my car. When the tech guy asked how much power I was making, I said about 400, but he heard about 1400. The yellow stickers are a class for 750+whp. When they called the purple class to start runs in the morning I noticed my car was left in the pits with Underground Racing Lambos, hugely modified GTRs, etc, so I knew something was wrong. We had a laugh and I got the right stickers and headed out for some runs. When I got there, I fully expected to be the slowest car on the property. My car is stock aside from an Eventuri intake. My girlfriend was in the car with me for every run that I did. The results were very surprising. First run out was against a Camaro SS. I don't know about mods as I never had a chance to talk to the guy. This was my first roll race ever. There is a lot more that goes into this than you'd think. You're trying to get to 65.99, keep the guy next to you, leave yourself enough space to get into the right gear before you punch it, all in a very shore distance. We got to the line, I matted it, and I was so focused on what was going on ahead of me that I didn't even notice how far ahead we pulled. The M240i put at least 5 car lengths on that Camaro. I don't know if he had problems or what, but it was exciting to win my first race out. I'm still waiting to see if anyone has video of this race. None of the photographers (that I was able to find) had any photos of this race either. I think there was a timing malfunction as well because I did 5 races and I think this was my highest trap speed, but it wasn't recorded. Second race out was against a C6 Corvette. I don't think it was a C6 Z06. This race was pretty funny. We get waved on from staging and get up to speed. I realized that I was in the wrong gear about 30 feet from the cones, so I downshifted, hit the green cones and we were off. I pulled on the Corvette hard. I have video of this race and you can hear me say something like, "Holy shit we're pulling on a Corvette!". Then I hit redline, because when I downshifted before the green cones I put it into manual. Whoops. I trapped 125 and put quite a few cars on the Corvette. Again, no idea about mods because I never got to talk to the guy. My third race was against a 2006 V10 M5. This was the best race I had of the day. We had a perfect start, and we were neck and neck the whole time. He trapped 0.3mph higher than me, but I broke the beams first. It was during this race that I realized I had done every race with my AC on full blast. Whoops. I airdropped him the video and he uploaded it to his youtube channel. The owner was a really cool guy. He said he was making around 450whp. Leads me to believe these card we have are really making some jam. There were some photos of this race, but I can't seem to find them. After the M5 I got paired up against a modded 2022 M8 Comp. I knew this time I was going to get wrecked. I didn't get to talk to this guy either, but I did find his Instagram. On this race, I knew he was going to win, so I jumped him pretty good. I hit the first cones at over 71mph. This picture was taken about half way down track as he was passing me like a freight train. That car was FAAAAAAST. It had gotten so hot at this point of the day that even though I jumped him I still only trapped 126. After that I lined up with the V10 M5 again. This time I remembered to shut off my AC. This was the only race of the 5 that I did with the AC off. We got up to speed pretty quick, but we weren't perfectly lined up. I started out about half a car ahead. There are pictures from the start line, but I can't find them now. This race was much more dominant. I walked away from him the whole way down the track and I think I got him by a car. Another really great race. Here are a couple more cool photos. I learned a few things from this trip. First, I love roll racing. I'm addicted. But more importantly, these M240i's are going to hurt a lot of feelings and damage a lot of egos out there on the streets. I was able to pull like that on a Camaro SS and a C6 Corvette, which I never in a million years thought would happen. Another thing I learned is that I need some kind of exhaust modification. The M240i sounds really great stock, but it's so quiet in comparison to other fast cars. I don't want it to be ridiculously loud however, so I need to make a choice. Anyone with more modding experience, is it better to do a DP and keep the factory exhaust to get more power when tuning, or can I keep the factory down pipe and use an Akrapovic exhaust system. Which will lead to safer, more reliable power? Again I don't think I can do both, the car will be just too loud for me. Next time I'll bring a draggy so I can get better data. I'm hoping they're able to get our DMEs unlocked so I can run this thing on ethanol next time as well. I'd really like an additional 100whp to make things really interesting. Thanks for reading this far! My girlfriend has all of the videos on her phone. If you guys are interested I can get them from her to show you. Last edited by rons e92; 09-05-2022 at 08:44 AM.. |

Nice! I may have to join you on one of those days when my car finally does arrive. I plan on getting a downpipe for performance gains. I can't run a loud exhaust because where I live cops target loud cars, but the downpipe should open the sound out a bit more.

I'm over 1,300 now. Wednesday I'm dropping the car back off at the dealer to finally complete the saga and while it's there I'm going to have them change the oil. |

Thanks for sharing your adventure! Feels great that our new m240i did so well against the other cars in it's class 👍. Looks like you caught on to the roll race thing pretty well! I'm still in breakin, but have ripped it a few times to 4500, and umm, yeah, it DOES rip! Wanted to go a couple years before doing any power modding, but don't think I'll make it that far lol. Looks like I will have plenty of company here!

I should also probably mention, a record was set during this event at this track.
A Boostin Performance T1 GTR set the all time speed record for Pocono raceway, not just in this event, but in any event ever. He went 232mph. To put that into context, the fastest recorded run I had all day was 126mph. He accelerated to almost double the speed I did in the same distance. I saw the car early in the morning in the pits. Giant front mount turbos, I saw a NX nitrous solenoid, and it was on bead-locks. Crazy car. This was the only picture I took on my phone. Previously I think the record was held by an indy car driver, but I don't remember the speed. The record for this event was 223mph in a UGR Huracan. The guy I raced in the M5 was able to catch the pass on video. Last edited by rons e92; 09-05-2022 at 09:14 PM.. |

I imagine the two hook is not meant to be used permanently, right? DO not want any issues with anything getting in the car through the opening. Thank you. |

I ran a bracket like this on my F30 for over a year and never had any issues. I'm not concerned with anything getting in there. This one is actually much nicer and has significantly more adjustment than the one I had on my F30. It can hold up to some very high speeds as well. On one of my runs I stayed in it past the cones up to 141 indicated on the dash and the plate bracket stayed rock solid. |

No plans to do any formal drag racing. Launching the car on a prepped surface puts a lot of strain on the driveline, and this is my daily driver until I get another car. Even then, I don't really want to put all that stress on the transmission, differentials, and axels. Roll racing is where it's at for me. I may or may not do some drag racing on the street though. |
