Torquing question
Hope this is in the correct post. I am doing my valve cover on my n54. I set my torque wrench at 7ftlbs and it did not move the OLD bolt. I slowly increased the wrench until I got to 13ftlbs then it moved. I decreased it to 12ftlbs and tried a few of the other OLD bolts and they did not move. Can I conclude that the factory torqued them down at 12ftlbs.
The diy's I have read recommend anywhere from 6.5-7.5ftlbs depending on the post. I have had my car for 7 years and the valve cover I believe is original. To me it seems like a good way to find the torque load? What do you think? |

Nope. The old ones will have a fair amount of static friction, which you've just measured. Over torquing valve cover fasteners is highly likely to cause cracks. Stick to the factory spec; use newtis.info to find it
