HOLY SH*T!!! That's crazy! Very glad to hear you and your daughter are OK. The car is replaceable, you and your daughter are not.

Wishing you the best!

M3 Battery Fire

530i battery fire

Slightly concerning as these are only the ones from BMW forum members
That M3 caught fire because it was in an accident. When certain conditions are met, the pyrotechnic device on the positive cable, BST explodes disconnecting the battery from the engine bay. Sometimes it will ignite the carpet or what not....it's not suppose to, but nothing is perfect.

OP sorry for your loss and glad you and your daughter are ok.

Was the battery OEM? If not, was the battery properly programmed (not registered) into the car? If you (or the previous owner) changed spec, it requires programming AND registration.

Also would you happen to know if the vent tube was connected? (If it was a lead-acid battery) If not hydrogen could have been building up in the battery compartment. Trying to jump the vehicle could have caused the battery to over charge and create excess hydrogen gases.

Update

Well insurance was very good about it all, but BMW has yet to call me as promised. Go figure! Interesting stat from Insurance that 90% of the BMW fires start in the trunk.
I am off to upgrade to a 335i

All settled

Going today to get an arctic white 335i with sport and premium packages 31k miles for 30k. Not bad. Let's try this BMW thing again!

Hey OP, glad that you and your family are alright.

But, I have something that quite concerns me, you said that you put your laptop in the trunk, and just right after your car wouldn't start? Was the laptop in sleep, ON or off? If it was ON or in sleep, was the WiFi or bluetooth on? Just trying to get the picture here, Oh and when the fire did happen was the laptop still there or?

It may or may not be relevant, but I'm just trying to get a better picture here :P

Also, 5 series have something called the Intelligent Battery Sensor, or IBS as people call it. When water gets into the trunk, the IBS shorts out and causing smoke or even fire like the one here. Not sure if the E90 is plagued with this issue as the E60 is ( been recalled and somewhat fixed )

Laptop?

Interesting enough, laptop was in sleep mode and wifi always on. Hmmm. But did get laptop out As for the water, nothing like that in the trunk.

Congrats on the outcome, you are going to love the upgrade to a 335i. That's a nice color too, don't see to many of them. Does it happen to have Crimson Red interior
