Benchmade Proper FTMFW!
I thought I would share pix of my new exhaust. I bought it from a local guy in Maryland. He had had it made by a company in Elkridge called Benchmade Proper, www.benchmadeproper.com. It's a 3" downpipe back exhaust with vibrant cylinder resonators and vibrant oval resonators. It has quad tips that are amazing. Everything is 304 stainless and tig welded by the owners, Joe and Brian. I took the exhaust to them after a day of trying to hang it on jackstands with a torn rotator cuff. I just couldn't pull it off and I also wanted to develop a relationship with them as I may expected to have the exhaust modified to my specs should there be drone or poor fitment, etc. I went this morning and had the exhaust hung and the bumper cut. Benchmade Proper is really small shop and just starting out but they are starting for the right reasons. They don't cut corners or overpromise. The materials are quality and they're willing to accommodate all requests. Their workmanship speaks for itself. I'm really happy with how it turned out. Joe cut my stock bumper and it looks great. I expected to end up buying an Mtech if this didn't work out but I'm completely satisfied. Enough with the typing...
The exhaust gets obtrusive around 2300 rpm but only under load in 6th. It doesn't drone it more like booms. I'm considering adding sound canisters (similar to what's used on a G37) in the near future. Joe knew exactly what I was talking about when I talked with him. In fact, he was doing that exact same thing for an RSX later today. I'm very pleased. The quality, fitment, and attention to detail that Benchmade delivers is awesome. |

What does it weigh? They need to invest in a mandrel bender.

Here is the virtual dyno comparison of a 3rd gear run before and after the exhaust install. The logs follow.
That's a pretty sizeable gain - 35 whp. Looking at the logs you'll see IAT differences of about 10-12 deg. That will negate some of the gains as cooler temps give more power but at close to the 100 deg mark I'm not sure it's that big of a deal. I'm not necessarily saying I gained 35 whp but the car feels quicker. There is a big throttle closure with the new exhaust. This was literally on the drive home so there was no adaptation. I never felt it - as demonstrated by the dyno. My timing values are dead even. |

Looks like quality work for sure, but labor intensive, no?
I love the tips you chose, single wall

It's more than an ots system but not by much considering it's installed and my bumper was modded to fit. It's high quality tig welded 304 stainless and designed to the customer's requirements. Clearly the guy I bought it from wanted to eliminate drone with all of the resonators. I added an extra set of hangers and will have sound canisters added when I do DPs.

Interesting. That's the cool thing about going custom - you can specify exactly what you want. I'd really like to see/hear that kind of a setup. Maybe a 2.5" Y pipe to a 3.5"-4" collector and tube to another Y out to the mufflers. Sounds very cool. Give them a call...

yup fantastic stuff man, you were so excited about it at the track Friday.
If I need anything done on my M3 i'll get in touch to see their prices. Its possible I'll need a new downpipe made if I change to a V-banded exhaust housing from my current 4 bolt. If I do that I'll want a e-cutout installed on the downpipe for crazy time sexy sounds. I'm all about custom SS exhausts, love them. Here is a walk around mine.
