CA Smog - 2 years or 4 years?

Hey guys,

I've heard from a few people that newer cars 2005 and up only need to smog their cars every 4 years. Is this true? Or am i smokin crack and it's still 2 years for everyone regardless of the year of vehicle?

I tried looking on the DMV site, but it was a bit confusing, so if anyone can shed some light, that'd be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I hope it's four, because both my cars are over 2 years old and I haven't smogged either one!

Quote:
In an Enhanced Area, you must obtain your inspection at a Smog Check station which has the BAR-97 Emissions Inspection System, the most modern type of test equipment. Your car will be tested for harmful levels of emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and Oxides of Nitrogen, an important smog-forming compound. All Smog Check stations in Enhanced areas are required to have the BAR-97 equipment. Your car must be tested every two years, when sold, or upon initial California registration. If your registration renewal notice indicates your vehicle has been directed to a Test-Only Center, then you must bring it to one of these types of stations, which offer testing but no repairs.
you can check out what your requirements are by entering your zip code at this link: http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/ZIPAREA/ziplookup.aspx

Gotcha! I guess i got confused by this "6 years and newer" clause.

Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Starting January 1, 2005, owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification. The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the department will indicate if a smog certification is required. If a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees. However, you will not receive your new registration or year sticker until the smog information has been received by DMV.

The newer cars get the first 4 years exempt from smog, then your every 2 years starts. So yes 6 years before you need to smog. Also if you sell your car in the first for years of your car, then you don't need to smog it before you sell.

Sweet! This news means that i can run an exhaust without the secondary cats. I was on the fence whether or not to delete the cats, but i believe i'm good now! I figure 6 years is good, plus i probably will have a new car by then.
