rubbing issue, need help and advice!

Hello,

I recently bought my first bmw, a 09 335i msport and the previous owner had VMR VB3 rims with tires mounted on them. The specs for the wheels are 19x8.5et40 and 19x10et38 while the tires are 245/35 and 275/30.

The wheels look great but the only problem is a rubbing issue for only the right rear wheel. It doesn't rub all the time, but only when I hit some bumps and when I drive others. Does anyone have an answer to why only the rear right side would rub? I'm not sure if I want to go through the trouble of rolling the fender because I don't want to do any modifications so I might just switch back to the stock wheels to avoid the problem.

The tires 235 35 19 and 265 30 19 are better than yours, but that rubbing is a problem for the E92. Some friends of me in Belgium have that problem also,
only on the rear right side. so, next time ,you sell a 265 30 19 or You must roll the fenders

Ok Teemmy, you are not in dire straights about this occasional rubbing noise. I too have this problem on my car with similar sized tires. It not catastrophic. Most likely, what you're hearing is the tire rubbing against the upper and outer step lip of the wheel liner during extreme compression of the rear wheel travel.

Go to your car and run your fingers on the underneath side of the fender's top center area, and you'll feel what I'm talking about. (My rear BBS are ET25s riding on Michelin PSS 265/30/19) Unfortunately, depending on tire type, overall 19" rims, sport or lowering springs, and lower offset values may lead to this issue.

I have rolled my fender lips just in case. After rolling the lips, the noise persisted (plenty of tire fender clearance), and then I had realized where and how the rubbing continued. At least for me and being within acceptable trade off, it's the price we pay to have excellent traction and good looking wheels and tires at the same time. So, it up to you if this rubbing noise is unacceptable or not.

For preventive and safety reasons, rolling the lips is still a good idea. More than likely, the previous owner had addressed this issue already.

thanks for the input. I don't know if i want to go through the hassle of getting the rear fenders rolled, so I might just sell the wheels and go back to my stock m-sport wheels.

Just roll the fenders slightly.

Those tire specs aren't recommended, for sure. A 235/265 combo is what we normally recommend for E90/E92 non-Ms, so fender rolling might be what you need in the rear. It's not a very difficult thing to have done, assuming the shop knows what they are doing. Probably wouldn't take more than an hour and when done correctly you would never know from the outside of the car.

Thanks for the help. The wheels look great on the car and maybe i'll look into a fender roll. It's definitely discouraging and embarrassing to have the wheel scrape when driving other passengers
