Wheels Handling Olympics

In July Wheels mag out today the E92 335i faces up against 16 other cars including some pretty serious machinery. Final result is 4th position - beaten only by Evo IX, Exige S and 911 Carrera S, all of which are far more narrowly focused.

Cayman, 350Z, STi are amongst the vanquished.

Peter Mackay's subjective assessment of on-limit demeanour ranked E92 second in the field.

Not bad for a luxury coupe eh?

I saw the article, too. I was surprised flicking through the ranks that it made it to 4th spot! Admittedly it was scoring 7-8th on average in the tests though but seemed to manage to get up to 4th on assessor subjectiveness (from memory)

Jeez I know the feeling. So sick of reading about the local v8 behemoths. Don't worry Wheels is still true to form with a HSV on the cover. FPV F6 and HSV GTS did however rank a lowly 12th and 11th in the handling olympics though...

From a laymans perspective, i'd say that outcome is pretty indicitive of the truth even though the Cayman is a surprise. Having said that, did they test all cars with the same brand / make of tyres and were they all new. I'd say it's a very subjective test if you can't create some form of parity.

I only buy Motor magazine but I certainly don't let them influence my purchasing decission nor do I think any jurno has a right to say a car is better than the next. It's all "Situational and Conditional" because you don't buy a car to flogg the pants off it everyday at every moment.

Well for sure they didn't test them with the same brand of tyres, but then I don't think anyone out there is likely to suggest the E92 was advantaged in any way by running on Bridgestone's "superlative" Potenza runflats would they!

I think the subjective assessment ranking (which counted for only 10% of the total score) is very valid. It shows just how balanced and tuned the 335i chassis is. All part of the Pure Driving Pleasure.

I have the Bridgestones. I don’t know how they compare to other brands.

Cheers.

I'd be surprised to hear anyone say "not worth the extra money over a 335i". I'm not biased to any one brand and pay respect where it is deserved but it would be fair to say that "M" division has never rolled out a lemon and will be king of the crop for at least 12 months after it's release.

If you read my comment i was implying that the new M3 is going to be absolutely amazing! i.e. give the 911 a run for it's money... I'm not one of the people that's giving the 335i too much glory before the new M3 lands and re-assumes it's mantle as the ultimate 3er!
