That is a symptom of the EGR 'stat being faulty, I would change that and the main 'stat to be on the safe side. Not to difficult to do, about £70 in parts plus some new coolant from BMW. Have a look at post 18 on this thread - Link...

Am getting 26/27 mpg on my 320si petrol doing local and abit of motorway but didn't really expect much more when I bought it to be honest
