BMW is no longer using a passive system, so you should have an active TPMS.

The technician bended the tires inward and unbolted the sensors.

Correct.
BTW, please don't tell me you are trying this yourself.

Would the process work in reverse? I purchased some OEM 189 wheels that were off of a 2007 335i coupe for my 2011 335D. Of course the sensors in the 189 wheels don't work with my system. But I was going to take the TPMS sensors from my 17 inch wheels I took off and use them on the new wheels. Just checking to see if that will work.

OP, as you are in Canada, you might want to check with a dealer as BMW Canada stayed with the rotation based FTM system when the US went to the in wheel TPMS sensors back in 2007.
And since the BMWCA website mentions TPI (Tire Pressure Indicator) rather than TPMS, I suspect that is still the case. Tom |
