im not 100% on my grinds, but i have this odd rattle coming from my clutch for sure...I am just so confused on how loud a grind is! it happens quite rarely though

if it grinds you will know; the vibration will travel up your arm, and when combined with the noise the transmission makes, its definitely identifiable

I've done a couple things.
IMO the best thing you can do without taking it to the dealer is change the fluid to redline D4 ATF. This fluid is completely awesome!! It's a bit thicker than the MTL-3 fluid that's in there and the cold weather shifting is superb! Second, I bled the clutch. Here's my experience: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=325037

Mr.5, did D4 ATF feel superior to synchromax? I remember your positive impressions from changing to synchromax and that is why I changed to synchromax as well.

I've got the same problem, grinds the first time going into second, fairly regularly after it's been sitting for a while (overnight), and worse when it's cold.
I also occasionally get it when trying to shift very quickly (drag/racing starts), which is really annoying. I've done the CDV mod and switched to RP, but neither really helped in my case. I don't think it's a synchro issue because it only does it the one time when you're starting out, if it was a synchro issue, it'd happen during regular driving as well. Just took a quick look at it but that TIS seems to be more describing clutch drag, which would effect all the gears all the time, and make it harder to shift. Doesn't sound like that's the problem we're all having, car shifts fine after that initial grind. It's strange, almost as if you need to double clutch (like someone said) to get the driven side of the transmission rotational speed up because the synchro just doesn't work for that one single shift in the morning. But all other times it's fine. Wierd problem. |

Here's another thing I did you guys and I can't believe that it made that much of a difference.
You know the bracket that is connected to the trans that braces section 1 of the exhaust? I took that off and the shifting is so much better. I took it off because I was thinking that the engine was torquing a lot bringing the exhaust with it which was torquing the trans out of the line of site of shifting. All I have to say is that the shifting has dramaticaly improved ever since I took off the bracket.

My msport with 3K miles it crunches into 2nd during the first couple of shifts when its really cold out. Doesn't do it all the time...its random. I just baby the shifter until the oil temp starts to move. Not a huge deal.

Pretty common on any car that has a cold transmission. Are you guys giving the synchros time to do their job, or just throwing it into gear? I do have to give more shifting effort when the transmission is cold, but I never shift hard enough to grind in the mornings.
Be gentle with them when cold, and they will serve you for many years. BMW (ZF) makes great gearboxes. |

Our MTs take AT fluid to begine with. That's how BMW rolls.

Ahh, makes sense now, thanks! So you recommend the Redline G4 ATF? Any grinding from 1st to 2nd when cold?? Any hard track use on it yet?

Happened to me on my 07 and also now on my '10 with < 2k miles.
I can pretty much safely say my synchros aren't worn out...

I'd love to have something done. I really wish I knew that that link was. I tried going to the internet archive to figure out what it had inside it, because apparently it was pretty important. Does anyone have a copy of that link?
