You are fine. It will come right off. Use enough coats

I have done this lots of times. In fact, I pulled plasti dip off parts of my car today while detailing it. It will never damagae anything, no matter what. It comes off clean with no residue no matter how long you leave it on.

From personal experience, I will also say that it's a million times easier to remove it later if you put on enough coats in the first place... like 5 or so. Any less and it's a bit more of a pain to remove in big pieces (though it still poses no risk to your paint.)

I also made this DIY that you may like to read:

Also remember, when you put the coats on do thin layers at a time and make sure it dries completely. Like everyone else said, no harm with plastidip on the paint.

Worst case you screw it up and have to redo it. You'd be out 6 bucks and a couple of hours. And I guess some newspapers. You can do it over and over till you get it right, with no risk of harm. My lower grills in my signature pic are plastidip. That was my first time using the stuff, and I managed to get it on the first try.

+1 Even coverage is key, it will make large areas such as the roof look less blotchy and ease with removal.

Are there long term studies done and is there enough evidence to back up this seemingly conclusive statement?

Yeah man, it's all good. No matter what it will peel off, it's just spray on rubber. Its not corrosive, and it has no reaction with paint. I've done rims, grills and I've even had friends dip their cars. It feels right off just like a vinyl wrap, but cheaper and easier
