Notice the ugly big clown nose and how the compass is NOT hidden when off. It's from the older style mirror but the install is the same.

If your car came from factory with plain jane/no frills mirror (no auto dim, no Homelink, no compass) - just the large clown nose used to manually dim the mirror, and you don't have BMW Assist (SOS):

The you most certainly need the retrofit wiring harness - the wires needed for the mirror aren't present.

I've done (4) of these retofits, and in each case, if the car is as I described above - the harness is needed. It's no big deal - only costs arounf $27...
