My Car Has a Ghost: Heater comes on by itself

I'm wondering if any of you have this issue, and if you did, how, if at all, you resolved it.

I have noticed of late that the heater comes on by itself. For example:
The other day I got in the car, turned off the heater by pressing the fan button until the lights showing the fan speed disappeared. About 5 or 10 minutes later, as I'm driving, I glance down and the fan is running at the slowest speed. I turned the fan back off. Another few minutes later, it's back on again.

The heating system was not at any point set to "auto." I did have the foot well air discharge indicator turned on prior to turning off the fan speed. The dial for the cold/hot air choice was set to red. The temperature setting was at 65 prior to the thing being turned off, and it was cooler than 65 outside, and probably inside the car as well. The snowflake light was also off for the entire time of this episode, as was the defroster.
This hasn't ever happened to me before and I haven't altered recently the way I have used (since I bought the car back in '07) the heating system.

I'm hoping I don't have a ghost. I don't really want to have to exorcise my car.

Thanks for any suggestions you have.

My wife's car started doing this recently. I haven't witnessed yet, but her description pretty much matches yours. Would be curious to hear if you found anything. 2007 328xi.

Interesting post - will try these steps:

Well, I did finally get an answer. I don't know that I believe it, but it's the answer I got from my SA: the battery is dying.

And, sure enough, about a month later, the battery finally gave out.
