BMW 335IS Performance Upgrade help
Hey Guys,
Ive had my 335is for over 5 months now and even though the power is amazing i'm looking for a bit more. I don't have any experience with any tuning what so ever or what would be good for the car, what do you guys suggest? I've heard good things about JB4, is there anything better? Also adding JB hurt my warranty? I'm not looking for a 600hp+ car lol just something a bit more powerful but not too crazy because I dont want to lose my warranty. Thanks! |

You have a N54 engine. This is important for you to know! There are so many options to increase the power of your engine. Just check the N54 section on this Forum! Whatever your tune will be using just remember that you will loose your warrenty. And by increasing the hp you will put more Stress on your engine and drivetrain. Keep this in mind! I bought my 335is about 2 months ago. So far I have Cobb AP running Stage 2+FMIC Sport (no intake), FMIC, and 3" Catless Downpipes. My experience with modifying vehicles is pretty extensive. I drive quite a bit so 2 weeks later I found myself with multiple Miss-fires just like the forums talk about, ordered a set of NGK 5992 based on some research and it runs great again.
One thing about these forums is that everybody has their own opinion, from you should leave an IS stock to running a mix of E50 daily. Since you have an IS I'm assuming is not a 2013, so it has an N54 which has the benefit that you can find a lot of knowledge just by searching the forums about all the things that could go wrong, what to expect from your mods, and the biggest issues. If you want a bump in power but want to take it to the dealer for anything that may typically go wrong, you should use something that can be removed easily and requires very few mods. For example a FMIC is something that most dealers won't ever say anything about it vs Catless Downpipes. As far as your tuning options with Cobb you can get away with Stage 1+FMIC agressive (no need for downpipes), or with the JB4 you can use their 335is maps which provide great power bumps without the need for much except a FMIC. You can always add more mods and go higher in power levels, just be sure you know what the cons are and find a understanding service advisor. |

Depends on what you are looking for. As you sais the car is quick as delivered. I had a specific goal, a bit quicker than stock & maintain a good IAT in the Carolina summer. Went with JB4 because it was flexible & had very good customer service. Got an addition bennie down the road when they developed 335is specific maps for the car.
To maintain a good IAT I installed an ETS 5” FMIC which had worked very well. That was it for power mods. I Have a DCT so I blocked out the kick down switch for full control in M/S mode. Car has run a best of 12.5/114 at Rockingham last year. Now for the downside. They can beat you up big time on your warranty for any tune including the JB4. The JB4 has a pass through map that goes back to stock for light service like oil changes but for major warranty work you need to remove it, about 1/2 hours work about you have done an install & know what you are doing. The FMIC is pretty much an unknown factor with some reports it’s a problem & others that its not. Will have a better idea on about the FMIC on Wednesday, am going in for oil, brakes, wipers & a slight coolant leak that may trip the warranty alarm. If they will not look at the leak will take it to an Indy for that issue. You modify a car you really need to be prepared to pay the bill out of your own pocket for some work.

If "caught" by the dealer you can lose your warranty. It all depend on the dealer. The dealers that I go to don't have any problem with it and help me out by looking the other way.
Choice of tune would be mind boggling from where you stand as your new. However the most convenient and elementary tune that is plug and play without getting your hands dirty is the Cobb AP and you will not regret it. As you grow more in knowledge in tuning and decide to add more power all this will be available for you at no additional cost other than buying supported mods Later if you want more power like a custom tune thus is also available via electronically, at addional cost, without having to take the car to a shop. If you decide you want to sell it the resell value is very high. |

Okay cool. I live half a mile from Lauderdale, where I buy all my cars, but they are not mod friendly. I go to Vista in Pompano too, I work with Frank. He is great. My new 335is should be here by next weekend and already thinking of tuning it.

Leave it alone till you are over the break-in period I was good to go at 1300miles.

I'm sure you appreciate all the responses and Congrats on your IS! I too just purchased one. A 2013 with DCT. I had an 07 n54 and a 12 n55 and both had JB4. Ran e50 on map 5 and loved it! I installed JB4 on my IS with 900 miles, taking it easy, however. I'm at 1150 miles this am and can't wait till 1200 + miles to see what she has!
I thought about Cobb over and over. I stayed with JB because of Terry's response time and support. Either way you can't go wrong! |

I have a 2011 IS and went stage 2 pretty quick. Here are my cobb dyno results between stock up to running E30, all on the same dyno about 3 weeks a part. Shoot me a PM if you want more info.

Guys there was some information on here wondering if anyone could pm me the info to a service guy that would warranty my injectors, I believe they are leaking having miss-fires at cold start only.
I'm FBO with Cobb, but I don't feel like taking the cats off, to fix the leaky injector problem if there is experienced tech out there that won't automatically flag me for items that are not related. |
