Transfer reg to new car
Can someone please advise me on the following.
When you remove you private plate from your car and you want it put a new car, does it have to be put on retention if you want the dealer to register the car on that registration? |

Is it a brand new car and you want the car to be registered on your plate or a used car?

It does not have to go on retention. You can simply have the dealer have the registration transferred onto your new car,it's about £85 for the transfer

I need to remove the plate prior to picking up new car and the dealer I'm getting the new car from is not the dealer I'm selling the car to

Sounds complicated change of car, you'll need to put on retention first.
When getting new have always taken the default reg for a month or two before transferring my own onto it. That way when you sell it'll revert back to that one making the documentation all match. Depends how long you keep the car though, the longer the less important this will be to any future owner.

If there is a local Licensing office you can take your documents in there and do it over the counter, they will issue you with a new tax disc Mot and return the vehicle to the original registration. However it will still take at least two weeks to get the new V5 through

When I transfer my plate from car to car it's normally a straight transfer.
You only need to retain it if you don't display it. It doesn't matter if there is a slight delay in selling one car and picking up your new one. |
