One More Trackday.. Need your advice "Tires"
Im in the process of buying 4 new tires, Michelin pilot super sport for my 335i sport..
My question is, I have 1 more track day at most probably in October and I need to know what kind of wheels/tires I can buy for cheap to be used only for the track... Unless you would recommend the Mich SS for track? I just don't want to eat through them as they aren't exactly cheap... And I have 2 tires in the front already saved "225/35/19" RFT thou.. not sure If I can put them to use

PSS will perform great on track and I highly doubt you'll put much wear from one day...

I'm just worried because I took my current Pirelli Run Flats and after just 2 track days the inside of the right tire is so worn that you can see the steel belt... which is why I'm buying those Michelin SS
Do you think that this shouldn't be the case with these tires vs. the Pirelli's?

Not sure It should've been aligned properly.. I also don't have LSD so im guessing the right tire was spinning more than the left ?...
Maybe it's due to the fact that it was my first 2 track days, and maybe I need to be more easy on the car in the turns..

Get a proper alignment first. I mean, eating through a tire that fast is unusual. Either the toe is way out of whack or something.
Pilot Super Sports are stellar tires for the track as mentioned - get some and use 'em. ![]()

alignment issues in the back? Is that even possible I never really thought of it..
and yea the wear is ALL on the very inside of the right REAR tire.. I do have some wear on all other tires on the outside edge .. but that's normal i know

I always heard michelins go SUPER fast on the track. Friend of mine said he burned through a set of PS2s in 2 track days. Maybe the SS's are better??? Pilot Cup Sports or BUST!

yes, the SS are both better performing and longer lasting than the PS2. that was one of the big traits Michelin was pushing about them when I went to their event last year.

I'm in the same boat you are. I have a set of PSS on my car with less than 800 mls and have track days this month and next. I'm going to see how they do compared to my contisport3s which were not so great but do have plans and highly suggest to get a dedicated track tire/wheel set up. Hankook ventus v12, Kumho Ecsta sport, Direzza sport dz101 come highly recommended from Nasa GTS racers (for use before they started racing competitively). The apex rims are great, very light and also not incredibly expensive. You should be able to get a decent tire/wheel combo for a little over $2k.
Keep in mind no street tires, apart from DOT R compounds, are designed for track use, some just perform considerably better than others. Michelin Cup Sport as someone mentioned would be a step up from PSS but they are very expensive. My plan is to use one of the above mentioned tires for a half a dozen or so events before stepping up to DOT R comps Toyo R888 or RA1, Nitto n-01/5. |

+1
or bent control arm Forgestar isn't up to par with Apex in terms of quality and strength. And don't bother going 255 square unless you have some camber up front else turn-in would be worse. |

They're not designed to operate at the heat range created by the heat from the excess slip angle on track. Anyone who got used to driving on R-comps that switch back to street tires will be in for a rude awakening when their tires are shot within a dozen sessions. I've switched back and forth between street tires and R-comps before, and you definitely need to manage a much smaller slip angle with street tires vs. R-comps. Not the easiest thing to do when you're used to the ~10º of slip where R-comps works best (at that slip angle, you'd be sheering off layers of street tire at every turn IMO).

If you look after your road tyres they will be fine. A heavy road car will shred road tyres if you stay out too long and abuse them. Do a couple of laps and come in will ensure they don't get too hot. It will also help preserve your brakes. Do 10+ laps and you oils find your tread peeling off a road tyre.
R tyres on a track are like winter tyres on snow. A revelation.
