Oil Level Sensor

Just wondering if anyone has heard of this issue or has had it.

In last two months on odd occasion when its cold approx below 2C randomly the car flags low oil level warning on the dash. The yellow oil can.

Even if the oil is on max it does this. If you ignore it it goes away or if you turn car on / off again disappears only to return randomly again.

Does it sometimes as you start the car or after 50 - 100 miles of driving there is no pattern to it.

The only pattern is the temp. If outside temps are past 5C it has never done it as soon as they get close to 0 or below it starts doing it.

It looks like the sump sensor is up the fritz so will have to wait until next oil change just wondering if anyone else has come across it.

I don't know what model you have, but if it has a dipstick, rely on that.
Level sensor failure is not uncommon, as you will doubtless have seen in other forum threads.
Of course, the yellow oil can symbol might be pressure related, but the fact that it illuminates at low temperatures would belie that theory.

Yep luckily the 320D has dipstick and I always have relied on it just a PITA getting the warning sometimes all these sensors just prove pointless to me. Whats the point of designing a sensor that costs £130 when it fails in 3 years

lucky you have the dipstick, I have a 320i without it and have to rely on the reading on the dash. mine always starts with max and after running is always at half way or minimum.

maybe you should check it..
bmw says that if you read a min value (then and only then) you should add 1 lit oil.
my bimmer now, after 8k miles~13k km since the last oil change, has a 4/5 of the max level. when was the last time you change them and how many miles~km have you done since then?

PS: absence of dipstick sucks, I own a 320i too...
