red light ticket in west LA - advice?

My girlfriend recently got a ticket (mailed to her; pics taken by a street camera) for running a red light out here in Beverly Hills. I know in the past I heard something about not having to pay these tickets anymore... but we can't find a credible online source to confirm this. Can anyone with a similar experience chime in? Thanks!

Im pretty sure Beverly Hills is the only part of the city that it is still active in. I'd call a lawyer.

If I remember correctly, all camera caught tickets are NOT mandatory pay in Los Angeles county; they are voluntary. MOST people don't know this. This is because when an officer pulls you over, he/she tells you what you did wrong and makes you sign the back of the ticket acknowledging what you did wrong and that you accept the violation and therefore the ticket. However, a camera does not perform the same task. Look in the back of the ticket, or I know for sure its in the city code, just not sure which section. Don't quote me on this until you find hard evidence. Don't want you to get in trouble because "someone on e90post told me so" lol

Correct that is the loophole, includes all cities is la county including BH. As long as you never acknowledge the ticket in any way (including calling the court and asking questions) you should be fine. But to CMA, consult your attorney.

Don't ignore it but don't dig into it by contacting the city. Contacting them is pretty much saying you've acknowledged the charges (a stupid camera ticket in this case). I don't know if they do it here in SoCal but when my sister got a camera ticket in Boise, they sent a courier over to her house to deliver the ticket. Luckily she was informed by others and ignored the poor sap.

Strongly advise you consult an auto/traffic attorney. There's tons of them out there in LA hungry and looking for work. Ugh...

These are very easy for traffic lawyers to defeat. I ran one in OC (it was my mistake) and I had a lawyer beat it for under $200. Lawyer said she wins 95% of them.

Uh, that statement would be incorrect. All you are acknowledging by signing the ticket is that you promise to appear in court on the date indicated. You certainly do not give up your right to contest the infraction (or misdemeanor as the case might be) in court.

I didn't say that it prevents you from contesting it. You can still sign the ticket and fight it and win, but by signing the ticket, you're acknowledging that an officer even stopped you and that he told you of you're infraction- shows that you are aware of what happened. Going to court means that you're acknowledging being stopped for a potential violation.

A red camera ticket does not do that. You aren't told of an infractions and therefore you don't have to acknowledge anything.

Below is what you said:

"makes you sign the back of the ticket acknowledging what you did wrong and that you accept the violation and therefore the ticket"

which court is it under? my wife got one of these over a year ago . i refused to pay it because of the articles saying they werent enforceable. Cut to a year later- i get a notice saying that i can either pay the orig amount of 400 something now- or face a 700 dollar penalty later and collections activity. I actually did call the number on the ticket to find out why they were still enforcing this. They responded that were i got it it was still active and that if i didnt pay they would suspend my license. Well, i had changed my auto insurance in november and no mention was made of my license being suspended, and i was also able to re register the car with no tickets mentioned. Therefore, i have come to the conclusion that they arent able to suspend my license and it hasnt gone on my record. Then a month later they send a very threatening letter to pay now or it will go to collections. I have a credit monitoring to alert me of changes in my credit and several months later nothing has happened. Long story short, the city knows they cant enforce these but is trying to scare you into paying. I imagine the majority of people would just pay to get it over with. You have to decide whether you want to take the risk- but i have found it better never to admit guilt by paying or acknowledging these tickets...g/l
