I just got the Conti Winter Contact TS830. They will be going on soon enough. I have used all sorts of winters through the deepest of Bayern winters in Munich in my E46. And I have never once got stuck or felt unsure. Changing your attitude and driving style is just as important as changing your tyres.

I will never be without winters again in a BMW, anywhere that has a winter below 8deg.

Ran them through part of spring too. I thought the tyre wear would be a problem still 6mm after 2 winters.

I had the conti wintersport TS830's in my 18" MV3's for my 320d and they were superb. When the roads got really icy and snowy, I wasnt wanting for traction anywhere.

I have used the following.....

Flaken Eurowinter
Conti Winter Sports
Michelin Tour HP
Michelin Alpin Sports
Dunlop Winter Sport 4D

That is the order I rate them from bad to best.

The Falken was terrible, absolute pants, no better than the all season Michelin.

The Michelin Alpin sport is a great all rounder, pretty good for UK weather as they were very good in the summer too.

The Dunlop Winter Sport 4D was incredible, it gobbled every thing up in our RWD Merc C Class estate.
I woke up to thick snow 600km from Calais and even with the inside 2 lanes covered in drifts and cars stuck every where I did the journey in 6 hours.
Also, they are so comfy and silent! Seriously weird how quiet a tyre they are.

Here is a pic of the snow covering the inside lanes of the autoroute, 600km in 6 hours, great tyres.....

shamless plug, but I have some wheels (220m bmw m3 Reps) + Dunlop winter sport 4D tyres with 6-7mm tread left on all wheels size 225/40 R18, only selling as ive fitted a big brake kit and they no longer fit over the brakes (bought new last year for my 330d @ cost of over £1400). PM if anyones interested (ill be putting them up with pics soon). Ta

Tyre Reviews website is very good - the 2013 winter sports tyre test (with 17" tyres on a 3 series BMW) puts the contenders in this order:

Conti TS850
Pirelli SottoZero Serie 3
Dunlop 4D

Last year's 18" winter tyre test :

Goodyear UltraGrip
Michelin Pilot Aplin 4
Nokian
Dunlop 4D

I'll say again - DON'T buy Kumhos.

I got Kumho last winter as its all they had. Got me to work and back but that's it. Felt like driving a boat..lol. They'll be back on in two weeks but i've decided that will be the last season.

The Dunlop 3D and Goodyear UltraGrip8 I have used personally and been hugely impressed with both. The Dunlop 4D is the best, depending on whose review you read. Like summer tyres though, you pays your money and takes your choice. Even the cheapo winters would be better in snow than the best summers but cheapo winters are dreadful to drive on when there's no snow on the ground.

That's exactly it! I know winter tyres have a little bit of movement of the tread blocks, but this is silly. And the TC light gives me a dashboard disco every time I go out

That sums up the Kumho KW27s I had on my previous car (Z4) - brilliant in the snow but squirmy as hell in cold/dry conditions and just about burnt out the TC light.

The Falken HS439s I have on my e90 are far superior in the non-snow conditions. Might be down to being the staggered width setup rather than 225- all round I had on the Z4.
