Hello guys,

I just recently got out of my 2008 G sedan which I loved but now I am trying to move on to a beemer. I have my eyes set on a 2011 335i sedan (do not like 2 drs) with m-sport with low miles. M-sports are definitely tougher to come by but I just love all the extra goodies especially the front fascia, rear bumper, and the M steering wheel that you get in the m-sport package compared to a regular sport (won't even consider the non-sport models). Anyway, I recently began my search around the web around about a month ago in order to research prices for a well equipped CPO's in Southern California because I wanted to check out the car and purchase locally if possible. From my hours of research, the prices in socal varied from 29k to 36k depending on the vehicle's overall condition, mileage, options included.

I recently came by a non-cpo which is a pre-owned 2011 335i sedan with m-sport, prem, nav, comfort access. It has 23,xxx miles on the odometer and is being sold my a local audi dealership. The vehicle is a 1 owner, personal lease return which was sold by the dealership and ended up at the Audi dealership strangely. The list price on this vehicle is $36,995 which I thought it was way over priced for what it is b/c you can easily find a similarly equipped CPO at that price range. In short, I got the price down to $31,900 before tax and fees. I countered this last offer with a $32,500 ODT. He declined the offer. I honestly don't think he will budge anymore on the price. That's where I stand as of now. Even though I'd prefer a CPO with 6yr 100k warranty, I feel that this car has low enough miles to give me long enough warranty coverage to address any tsb's, recalls, or services I might need before the end of its original factory warranty.

I just wanted to get a feedback from you guys to see if $31,900 before tax and fees is a good deal on this car. I am new to the BMW scene, so please go easy on me.

I would go with a CPO. Especially, with a 335.

Edit: I found several CPO 2011 E90 335i with M Sport and Navigation for around the same price with a quick search.

Thanks for getting back to me. I understand CPO would be a better choice if the prices were the same. But if I was able to get a low mileage car for couple of thousands less than a CPO, don't you think it would be better to save the $$$ and put that into extended warranty?

Yes, that is if BMW is willing to sell you the extended warranty. The car need to pass their inspection before they will sell you anything. It's really a hassle for minimal savings. The extended warranty that you are going to buy is not going to be any cheaper than if you would have gone with a CPO. Because the car is being sold through a dealership, even your original 4 years/50K miles is void. You may want to look into that, that is my understanding of the warranties original or extended. They are on transferrable if you bough private party, they are not if bought through dealership.

Besides that point, I did a quick search on Autotrader for CPO cars with the options you've listed. The price came back $35K - $38K. I'm these prices can be worked down to $32.5K - $35K depending on your negotiation skills. I would rather pay an extra $2K - $3K for a 335 that is CPO'ed.

Thank you so much for all your input. I was NOT aware that the factory warranty does not roll over if you buy through a dealership and not private party. I never heard anything like this from any other car manufacturers. Usually when you purchase a car, no matter who you purchase from, the original factory warranty is transferred to the new owner with the purchase. I did not know that was the case with BMW's.

Maybe I'm getting confuse with Mercedes warranty, but I have read somewhere that this is the case. Your best bet is to call BMW NA to verify.

I just called BMW NA and they confirmed that the original limited warranty for 4 yrs / 50k does in fact transfer to the 2nd owner even though you purchase the vehicle from a third party dealership. However, in this case, you cannot get it CPO'd and purchasing extended warranty is going to be more difficult and totally up to the dealership.

Maybe your local BMW dealership can do a dealer trade with Audi and then have it CPO'ed or offer you an extended warranty.

I appreciate your input. That might be another option, but I'd rather prefer purchasing the car for few thousand less w/o the CPO since the mileage is pretty low and well under the original factory warranty.

I'm in the same position as you and opt to go with a lower mileage car that's not CPO that's still under the original warranty. Once it gets close to the end of the warranty period, I will be looking into a 3rd party warranty from EasyCare.

Are you going to be looking at 3rd party warranty because it was not purchased from a bmw dealership? I was told that if a pre-owned vehicle is purchased through a non bmw dealership, you can't purchase extended warranty through BMW NA.

To your first question, yes. I did some reading around and some say that going through certain 3rd party warranty may cover the same as CPO and then some. Also for me, I only drive about 5,000 miles a year so getting a 3rd party warranty with the ability to choose my terms is a much better option in my case.

So did you get the 335 M Sport? I passed on 2 CPO 2011 335's w/M Sport because they would not come down below $35K. They are hard to find and the Dealers know this and charge a premium. I ended up getting a 335 Sport Pack CPO and many other options for $32.9K. Sticker was >$55K on my car. The M Sport 335's the dealers were selling for $35K to $38K only had a sticker of $52K-53K. Smaller sticker and were asking more, just because they had the M-Sport pack..
You should ask the dealer to show you the sticker price and the options, and also use the VIN decoders on the web to make sure the car you are looking at has all those options, and the wheels have not been changed out, etc. One BMW dealer was trying to sell me an M Sport 335 with 17" wheels and were still asking $35.9K (down from $37.8K). They wouldn't budge so I walked away. The car was sold a couple of days later when I called them back to see if they would come down a little more. I feel good about my CPO 335 for $32.9K that has a $3K higher sticker than the M-Sport ones I was looking at.

Buying a non-CPO car is fine as long as it has a year or more left on the new car 4/50k warranty, and get the price knocked down a lot so you can use the difference $ to get your own ext. warranty. It could run you $3K or more. $31,900 is really good. You might even not consider getting an ext. warranty since you only put 5k mi/yr on it. Your extended warranty will run out before you even have 60k mi. on the car. Not worth it. Put the $3K aside that you saved on the car for repairs and maintenance.

UPDATE: Thanks again for all the helpful advice and input. I ended up purchasing a non CPO 2011 335i sedan with M sport pkg w/ prem & nav w/ 23k miles. List price was $36,995 for this car but I was able to negotiate the car down $30,800 before taxes and fees after weeks of going back and forth with the sales rep over emails. OTD was $33,800 financed @ 2.49%.

I absolutely love this car! It's definitely an upgrade from my 2008 G35 sedan which I retired from. I already started ordering some minor upgrades for the car including an OEM m3 spoiler, OEM black kidneys, Osram CBI replacement xenon lights, 9006 Morimoto xenon kit for the fogs, LUX V4 angel eyes. I swore to myself I would NOT mod this vehicle but ya'll know how that goes. lol Next week, I plan to ditch the stock RFT's for some Pilot SS's. Can't wait to get new tires! I absolutely despise these run flats!
