Car Does not Start in the Cold

I have a 2007 e90 335i. With the cold weather that we've been having (5F in the morning) my car would not start.

Brought the car into the dealer for service and they hooked it up to their Midtronics machine. It said the battery was dead. They charged the battery returned the car to me and said to drive it more (I drive it every day).

Two days later I drive the car 200 miles to visit my friend and try to start it the next day. I get two cranks and all the lights go out on the dash.

Bring the car into the dealer again. They run a "load" test and determine that the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) is bad (not sure why they didn't do that the first time). Apparently the IBS tells the car when to turn everything off so as to not drain the battery. Mine was not working so everything in the car was always running draining the battery overnight. I guess there was enough power left in the battery to start the car when it was warm but not enough when it was cold.

The dealer replaced the IBS and it sat there Saturday night, all day Sunday and Monday. It is Tuesday today (15 F when I picked the car up) and it looks like it is starting properly again.

Something to keep in mind if your car does not start with a dead battery. It may not be the charging system or the battery. It could be something else.

Its Fixed

Looks like the fix to the IBS is good. It was 11F this morning. My car sat in the parking lot from 6:30PM to 7:30AM and it started with no problem.
