Car Missing between 3k - 4k RPM

I have a 2009 335I Convertible with Sports Package that currently has 118,000 miles (and man I love the car). I drive 120 miles round trip to work. I have had the JB4 since 50k. I use the BT cable to check codes.

First, I would like to thank the forum for the most incredible information and DIY. I used the info to replace the following at 117,000:
- Low Pressure Fuel Sensor
- Fuel Injectors including the coding
- Spark Plugs

Original Injectors and Fuel Pump were replaced at 25,000 by Dealer, so this is my second set of Injectors and HPFP.

At 115,000, I was getting the half yellow engine light and severe shuddering. Took it into Dealer knowing that I had 120k warranty on HPFP. Besides the HPFP (which was covered under warranty), they said all 6 injectors and Low Pressure Fuel Sensor needed to be replaced...at $3000. Thus I utilized the DIY to do it myself.

When I WOF on highway from 2000 RPM, it begins to shudder and miss through 3,000 and 4,000 rpms and sometimes up through 5,000 rpms. It has been doing this for a while. When I changed the plugs, I could not believe the carbon build up that I found on some of the plugs.

I am now trying to figure out what it could be. Reading the forums, I know it could be:
- Coils
- Carbon buildup
- Vanos
- Low Pressure Fuel Pump

Rather than taking the time and money to swap items out that may not need to be replaced, are there any other ideas or diagnostic tools that I can try?

Thanks a bunch!

Fred

Fred, what were the codes you came up with. That would help us greatly on giving you advice on the next step.

You will likely want to just clean the vanos solenoids and get a carbon cleaning anyway condiering your mielage.

If it was coils you can swap with other cylidners and see if your misfires move, assuming you have misfires. If the misfire follows then you need a new coil.

It's free to clean solenoids and free to swap coils from one cylinder to the next.

+1

It is probably coils based on the fact that you get the misfires under "load" and do not feel any issues at idle... I would do as suggested above before just throwing parts at the car.

The only code I get is the 2aaf fuel pump plausibility, which seems to crop up with the JB4.

- On moving around the coil, I don't know what cylinder is causing the issue, so I am at a loss on what procedure I should use. I'm not getting any codes so if cylinder 1 is the issue and I move it to cylinder 2, I will still notice it at 3000 - 4000 rpms, but still won't know where it is coming from.

I can definitely clean the vanos as an option!

Did you check the shadow codes with the BT tool also?

That code is usually paired with other codes such as multiple misfire codes or fuel pump codes...

I will check when I get home this evening. I did have some, but they were 2D codes and I could not find anything on them. I don't remember exactly the full codes so I will run it again tonight.

I do appreciate all the help!
