Engine Malfunction Fault Code

Hey guys, my cars an 08 335xi and twice has thrown me the engine malfunction reduced power message and goes away after restarting the vehicle. I was going to take it in to get diagnostic and fault codes pulled on it but was curious if I could do it myself if I purchased and AccessPort? Fogured it would make more sense to buy it now if I could pull a code and get some power gains from it.

Yes, the AP reads codes. I would go that route if you would like the additional power as well.
