SES Code 0040D4: quest to find a solution (DPF Delete folks - come in)
Quote:
There are two possible culprits here: EGR block or DPF system and possibly something did not take in the retune. Since the code is "exhaust regain control" I assume that this is DPF regeneration related, but is not necessary. May be I shall send the error to the BMWHat app developer when it pops up again, see if he can narrow it down. I am not really bothered by this shadow fault as there is no SES light, but the curiosity still gets me. There are no EGR related parameter monitoring in the BMWHat that I could find. However, there are a lot of DPF related ones. What I would love for someone with a blocked EGR, DPF delete and Ecotune retune look at these are compare to what you get on your end. Here is a listing with their corresponding values: -Absolute Pressure Before the Particulate Filter = 775hPa to 980hPa This is a weird one, it is variable, and as soon as you start the car it starts creeping up. The further it gets, the slower it increases. 775hPa is about 11Psi and 980hPa is about 14Psi. These are the values for a short trip to a store. I will monitor these further. And here are the related ones to the first one above (PF=Particle Filter/Particulate Filter): -Corrected Absolute Backpressure of the PF = 1018hPa (14.76Psi) -Corrected Differential Pressure = -1.01hPa -Filtered Differential Pressure of the PF = -1.01hPa -Differential Pressure Measured by the PF = 500hPa (7.25Psi) -Pressure Upstream of the Particle Measurement = 500hPa (7.25Psi) -Differential Pressure on the Particulate = 6hPa -Offset for PF Differential Pressure = 6.97hPa -Raw Volume of the Corrected Absolute Backpressure = 6hPa -Exhaust Backpressure Before PF - Corrected = 0.00hPa -Exhaust Backpressure Upstream of the PF = 0.00hPa I think these ones above plus the first one may have something to do with the code. Some of these do not make sense but also may be needed for the retune. In some places backpressure have different values (1018hPa, 500hPa, 6hPa and 0hPa) and same goes for differential pressure (500hPa, 6hPa and 0hPa). -Number of Successful PF Regenerations = 319 -Accumulated Operating Time of Regenerations = 382033.41s -Average Regeneration Interval = 348km (216mi) -Calculated Remaining Capacity of the PF = 250,000km (155,000mi) -Vehicle Mileage at the Last Regeneration = 110,757,736.00m = 110,757km (always was about 3000km behind, so per my notes 113,722 - diff is about right) -Average Consumption of the Vehicle Since Last DPF Exhchange = 0.00 L/100km -Distance Travelled Since Last Successful Regeneration = 0.00km -Operating Time Since the Last Successful Regeneration = 0.00s -The Average Speed Since the Last Successful Regeneration = 0.00km/h -Regen Status = 4325377hex -Status - Regeneration Castle = 0.00 -Status - Regeneration Interruption = 0.00 -Status - Regeneration Request = 0.00 -Status - Operating Range of the Partikelfilterdruckplausibilisierung (PF?) = 0.00 -Status - Release of Plausibility with Ambient Pressure = 0.00 And the Soot items are all in line: -Continuously Simulated Particle Mass = 9.01g -Corrected Particle Mass Additive = 9.01g -Digitally Filtered Value of the Measured Soot Mass = 0.00g -Simulated Soot Mass = 9.01g -Soot Mass = 9.00g Anyone else wants to look at their values, especially for the back pressure and differential pressure? |

Here is a plot of that first parameter: "Absolute Pressure Before the Particulate Filter" over my drive home today. This is vs RPM. There really is no explanation for this at this point.

I'll make an attempt to measure those things this weekend.
Although some of those sensor readings I'm not sure make sense for our US 335d. The only DPF pressure sensor we have is a "differential" sensor, whereas the euro version is a little different. Not sure what BMWhat is using for some of those outputs.

I respect your utilization of data. Thanks.
I was taking some data on my redneck diffuser, to cover the gapping muffler delete non-aero space, this afternoon (I've been drinking so I'll wait until later to post data), but was also getting back in-tune to using the BMWhat app (it's not yet anywhere close to being as easy to use as the Torque app) ... Is this the type of data you are looking for in terms of similar behavior? If you can tell me which 6 exact parameters you'd like to see, please let me know.

-Absolute Pressure Before the Particulate Filter -Corrected Absolute Backpressure of the PF -Corrected Differential Pressure -Differential Pressure Measured by the PF -Raw Volume of the Corrected Absolute Backpressure Also, I am very interested in your AFR data (probably from Torque). I'm gonna try getting to mine. This is on a separate topic of excessive smoke. When I was dynoing mine it smoked half like this guy Thank you. |

The smoke in the video is much more than I see with the Ecotune by itself.

Looking through some old data that may be of interest. This is from when the DPF was still on. These were captured with the Bavarian Technic tool.
First one is of the differential pressure during a full fueling run. Second one is normal roadway drive during a regen.

Also found this data from soon after I had the Ecotune downpipe installed. It's for a full fueling run as well.
The absolute pressure is trending up, but I don't think this means anything as we only have a differential pressure sensor. The differential pressure measured with the DP is dramatically lower than what was measured with the DPF in place...

Thank you so much TDI, this is what I see with the absolute pressure, it's just goes up slowly. This is good, as it is the same behaviour as mine, so nothing unusual I suppose. Interesting that diff pressure is jumping slightly. I'll have to full run mine and see what it does. Thank you.

Here's the BMWhat log of the parameters you asked for. Just a note ... at this point in time the DPF pressure sensor tubes are just hanging and not plugged into anything, which is different than the previous data I posted.

The first three are the same as yours. The other two: Raw Value of the Corrected Absolute Backpressure and Corrected Differential Pressure are trending us as well and are somewhat RPM dependent or more like EGT dependent, but I did not monitor this. This is still inconclusive.

I have had a constant shadow code with both the Evolve and Ecotune remaps. For me it pops back up right away after "clearing" it. Never triggers the SES light and doesn't show up on the OBD scanners, but does with the Bav Tech tool.
