it seems that the castrol edge titanium is what all the auto retail outlets seem to get (repco, autobarn, supercheap),while the professiona castroll branded oil goes exclusively to bmw dealers.interestingly though they are both BMW LL-01 approved,as are quite a few other brands of motor oil sold in australia.

Haha yeah i only found the offer on Sat night!
The closest repco to me was closed, went to another and tragedy the shelves were empty of 5W30 I grabbed some GTX for $9 for one of my old Rover 4 stroke mowers, and some 10W40 magnatec for my old girls 93 nissan bluebird then when i was walking out I found a 'specials' stand that had a few sneaky bottles of 5W30 in it amongst some magnatec |

FYI
Castrol Edge Engine Oil - 5W-30 Fully Synthetic on sale again. This time at Super Cheap Auto for $38.78 for 5l. Normally $68.88.
I assume the 5W is fine given it doesn't really get cold like Europe and I think the 30 is consistent with BMW specs. I've been thinking of changing mine myself to get rid of that shit the dealer put in pre-purchase for what its worth. I can't see them putting the good stuff in. I notice they also sell 0W-40 for $63.77, 5W-40 for $74.88, and 10W-60 for $58.79.. Go figure Anyone know if 5l is enough for an N54 without changing the filter? By memory it's 6.5L with a new filter and around 6.2L without. You will need a 2nd 5L container anyway for topups most likely (over 6-12 months you will most likely have to add a litre or so) |

Ok thanks that is good to know.
I notice there is no dip stick... do people check their own oil regularly with the menu system or do they wait for the oil light to come up? |

Oh don't worry, it'll tell you if it's munching up all your oil.
Mine sure told me today. |

I did some reading on this awhile ago. From what I've been able to gather, Castrol oils sold in Australia are only limited to a few versions (more variety overseas):
There are two types of Castrol Edge 0W-40: 1) ACEA A3/B4, API SN (rated BMW Longlife-01) 2) ACEA C3, API SN (rated BMW Longlife-04, recommended for diesel engines) Castrol Edge 5W-30: 3) ACEA A3/B4, API SL (rated BMW Longlife-01) API SL is an older standard, API SN is the newest standard, and apparently signifies an improvement in sludge control, so it would seem the 5W-30 might leave more residue when it is burnt. (Castrol even says as much in the footnote: "Passes all engine test performance requirements of API SN but exceeds Phosphorus limits of those classifications.") I've also seen an article that said you want the least viscous oil possible during a cold engine start because that's when wear is the greatest, so you want the oil to be pumped everywhere as fast and as easily as possible. However, for best performance, you want an oil that is the least viscous at operating temperature to minimize engine drag. So, in summary, 0W-40 is best for engine wear and less sludge, but is more expensive and slightly less optimal for performance. 5W-30 is comparatively not as good for engine wear and may leave more deposits, but is less expensive and slightly more optimal for performance. So choose your poison! |

Ok thanks for that info. I figure that because it never really gets below 10°C in most of Australian then the 5W is adequate unless you live in the snow then the 0W is better.
My understanding is sludge is more a factor of extended service intervals rather than the viscosity of the oil. Inferior oils or excessively high oil temp (oil coolers help) also cause sludge. I believe that there are detergents in the oils these days to break down sludge so presumably if your oil is changed frequently enough there should not be any sludge build up or minimal. So maybe 5W-30 will generate slightly more deposits but with frequent oil changes I'd imagine this is not really a problem and perhaps with the 30 weight the engine will spin a bit freer |

Valvoline Synpower Engine Oil - 5W-40?
Ok dealer reakons they put in Valvoline Synpower Engine Oil - 5W-40 although not positive but thinks that's what it would have been.
Any thoughts on whether I should replace with Castrol Edge 5W-30 or not bother until next service? |
