Question Just hit 15,000 miles, now what?

is my car supposed to call the service and set up an appointment? or how does it work? the car now gives me a "Service" message on start up.

i know i know, i should know such a thing, but i have only gone to service once so far, for an oil change, and have since moved to another state.

and i know i know, i only drive my car around 7,500 miles a year...

I learned the dumby hard way. I have heard they know when your oil change is due. Yes an appointment is needed. I always ask for my loaner to be clean and fueled up. On the phone you may ask for your SA if you have one assigned. He will more than likely know what is needed to be serviced.

Call for an appointment WELL IN ADVANCE if your dealer has loaners to loan out.

Yes call and make an appointment. Also be aware that your dealer might not give out loaners for your 15k service. My dealer would not give out a loaner for oil service. The car was done in under 1.5 hrs which was good. My SA said they don't give out loaner for service that is under 2hrs time and oil changes take 1-1.5 hrs to do.

Oil change is only done at the 15k mark, correct? No fluids flushed or anything?

I thought the computer determines when the first service is -- it's not always exactly 15K, right?

I'm just beyond 15K, but my computer says 2200 miles to the free oil change. At the rate I drive, that means end of December or beginning of January. I think it's just an oil change, but hopefully they at least give it a quick inspection when it's in the air.

It has only been 5.5K since my last oil change, so I'm not too worried about waiting another couple of months. I plan on asking for new wiper blades at that time.

^Right. The 15k mark is just an estimate. Many dealerships use the countdown meter and won't take you in for a free oil change if the countdown meter is more than 500 miles.

Wait until the service light comes on. Just make an appointment when it first comes on and take it in.

so what's with all the fuzz on the commercials where they show how the car calls the dealership and then someone from the dealership calls you to set up an appointment?

the commercials i have in mind feature 5-series. but i assumed this would the case for all new bimmers, no?

You can do this via iDrive. I think it's "Service Notification" or something like that. I prefer to just pick up the phone and call, though.

i just called to set up an appointment at the Weatherford BMW. they said it's only going to take about 1.5 hours. does that sound right?

i know some of you here mentioned i should call well ahead and request a loaner, but if it's a 1.5 hour kind of deal, i don't see why that would be necessary.

it drives the same, if not better. of course, the first ~2000k are kind of rough but it's like butter afterwards.

it's really freaky, but i really don't see any wear or tear on it even after 2 years. it still looks and drives like new.

that said, if you get a low-mileage bimmer that has been taken care of well, you're basically getting a new car.

my dealer called my cell. She said my car was due for service. I said I wasn't aware of that and was she sure. She said the car called them! She asked about any other probelms. I told her my door pull was peeling, she said that was common. So she set up flat bed delivery of a loaner and pick up of my car at home.

Nick Alexander in L.A. Some people have a poor opinion of them but it has been a good experience for me personally.
