I now have a short commute of 5 miles. I have to say, I do miss my longer 45 minute commute.
Seems I'm the only one who doesn't mind traffic (for the most part). That time spent in my car decompressed me from the work day. I also go to enjoy my car. If traffic on the highway was very bad, I was lucky enough to have back roads to get back home through. The only negative being that it added about the same time to the commute as if I had stayed in traffic. But again, I got to enjoy the ride. Now, the car barely warms up by the time I get to the office. And I don't have that "me" time before getting home. |

I'm the same way. My hour or hour40min commute gives me time to wake up, listen to some tunes, and get in the zone. Then the ride home is a breather to get all the work shit out of my brain. Get home, commence shenanigans.

I have worked from home for the last 3.5-4 years. My current client is dispersed all over Europe so all my interaction with them is over the phone.
As with all things, it has benefits and downsides. Benefits - More time with family as I finish at a reasonable hour. I can also do school runs. Downsides - It is easy to sit on your backside and not move all day. It is also very isolating. Personally I prefer to work from an office. If nothing else, the travel time allows you to disconnect from the working day. |

50 miles each way! Luckily I work 7am to 3:30pm, if I had a '9 to 5' i'd be spending 3 hours driving each day instead of 2.

About 60 feet, from bedroom to office, less if I decide to watch the news while I work. My old commute was counted in thousands of miles, every week.

Took the LIE (Long Island Expressway for those non- NY's) during rush hour from exit 62 (Niccols Rd., Blue Point) to exit 49(Rt. 110, Melville). Took anywhere from an hour to 2.5 hours depending on season, exact time we left etc. God forbid a car accident, fire, or even routine traffic stop...Add 30-40 mins...
Total Mileage: Approx 50-60 miles round trip, with an Avg. time of an hour and a half + each way in normal rush hour traffic.. Luckily once I got the M, the LIVE TRAFFIC info on iDrive suggested a new Rt. (Southern State) which only shaved about 10 miles, but at least 45 mins off the trip both ways... Not only is it a shorter faster route, but there happen to be a number of nice cars on SS at that time, even a few other M's, MUCH less police, and some wide, newly paved, windy roads that can be fun when I have a decent stretch all to myself Once again, the M saves the day... But I still spend about $180 (3 Fills/ week) mostly from the commute. But small price to pay, when I jump out of bed and get ready ASAP just to give a "quick detail" to my black M while she warms up...And walk into my high stressed job feeling like the man...

Quite a few of my neighbors, however, live within five miles (generally less given the size of the city) of where they work. Perhaps that's a function of there being good jobs and "dream homes" in D.C. Given my circumstances, I'm probably not the best person to opine on whether it's better to live close to work or buy the house one most wants. Perhaps buying land and building your dream home near to where you work may be something you want to consider if having a short commute is that important to you. All the best.

To the LIE guys.... I tip my hat to you. That has to be one the worst roadways I've ever been on. I have friends and family that I used to visit and there was always bad traffic there. Never ending construction, congestion, and accidents almost 24 hours a day. |

My wife and I ultimately made the decision to live further from work to be able to build our dream home where we wanted. We work about 20 miles away (same business park).

Used to be 17 miles which would take 1-1.5 hours each way. Recently moved and now live 3 miles away and takes 5-6 minutes. Love it!
