10w6 corner loaded with 500w left me wanting more. I would recommend a 12" sub at least but a 12w6 won't do well in that application. If you can, look at iDQ or SI BMK IV. From an SQ standpoint, the SI is hard to beat, at any price.

Check out a thread i posted for when i rehauled my sound system on my e90 LCI for pics etc, heres a little of my sound system, i had the base sound system which was terrible:
Focal 100KRS Front & Rear W/ Tweeters
JL Audio Subwoofer 12W6V3
JL Audio XD400 (Speakers)
JL Audio XD600 (Subwoofer)
2 HIFI BMW 8" Under Seat Subs

From my perspective the HIFI under seat subs did better than my crappy 6" subs, i still want more but found a cheap set of 8" subs for $100 i said id give it a shot, after all that i had to recode my headunit to HIFI to compensate from the base stereo. Now the sub in my trunk looks and sounds great with my custom fiberglass box made by AVI-Boston BUT our trunks are extremely sealed as in what the sub is "bumping" in the trunk, not alot makes it into the cabin, what i did to somewhat help get some sound in the cabin was keep the arm rest closed but i removed the ski-pass. I did drive around with my seats down once and holy crap thats when it sounds great.

I'd post the link to the thread but idk how on the iphone app, hope the pictures and the small review will help.

Kai,

I searched through some of your old posts and saw that your 10w6 was a v2 - I would be getting the v3. Have you listened to the v3? My dealer says that the v3 has a bigger motor structure (same as the W7) and therefore more excursion than the W6v2, and that there is not enough room for a 12" enclosure in that location without it sticking out into the trunk further than I want it to. Have you compared the 10w6 v2 and v3? This graph is from JL:

Thanks,
Robert

Found your thread - looks nice but I don't think I want my enclosure to stick out that far into the trunk; will probably stick with a 10" sub in the same location as yours. Good tip about the rear seats - I do have the split folding rear seats and am usually alone when driving - could probably have the smaller part of the back seat folded down much of the time!

A 10" would work good for you, only reason why it sticks out a bit was due to the sub being a 12", in person it looks good only minor issue is when i open up the small compartment underneath where the spare tire would usually be, i have to wiggle it due to the enclosure sticking out a bit, nothing to major tho. Goodluck bro

Thanks,

In the real world, you will likely not see much more excursion from the v3 since the relatively small airspace behind the sub limits cone travel. If it was in a larger enclosure, or IB, you would probably have a little higher output, since the cone would have less of an air spring behind it. I remember pushing my V2 to its limits with 500w, and the excursion was nowhere near the rated value. In small enclosures, you reach the thermal limits way before the excursion limits.

Anywhoo, if you ask me the enclosure should be built to handle either a 10 or a 12, such that you don't get stuck and have the option to upgrade. The SI sub I mentioned only needs 0.5 cubes, and while I have not heard it myself people rave about it enough for me to recommend it.

BTW, a 12" enclosure does not have to be deeper than a 10" one, but since most 12" subs require over 1 cubic feet, they usually end up sticking out further. Both the SI and IDQ subs work well in under 1 cubic feet of air space.

Subwoofer installed, problem solved. Sounds excellent now!!!

I still have 150 W/channel going to the underseat Focals but the crossover point has been raised and all speakers have been retuned after I spent the last week breaking them in. The subwoofer has 500 watts going to it from the new amp I got with it.

My conclusion: The Focal underseat "subs" need a true subwoofer in the trunk to go with them. Given the size constraints of the underseat enclosure I suspect that is not the Focals' fault, but rather BMW's. But like I said before, the only other speakers I've heard in this car were the HKs that it came with, so I have little to compare with. Without the subwoofer the Focal underseats produced a modest improvement in midbass output, but with the trunk sub the car totally rocks!

My system:
Mobridge DA-1
Mosconi 6to8 DSP
Mosconi D2 100.4 for front (Focal IFBMW-S) and rear (stock HK) speakers
Mosconi D2 150.2 for underseat subs (Focal IFBMW-Sub)
Mosconi D2 500.1 for trunk sub (JL 12W6v3)
Mosconi RC Mini DSP remote controller

How much for the sub? I think it could be a good upgrade for my base system.

I still don't get why most of you prefer two tiny subs underneath the seat than in the trunk. The power does not compare at all, off course if you are looking for something subtle I guess that'll do it, but most people that go for this solution end up going with the same route, a sub woofer in the trunk.

That sub runs around $400-450 in this area.

Well, despite all my research (including lots of reading in this forum) I still wound up learning by experience. I thought that by upgrading the underseat speakers and giving them more power I might be satisfied in the bass department, since I mostly listen at low to mid volumes, and could save some trunk space by just upgrading the underseats. But I was not satisfied with the sound until I added a trunk sub. Maybe I would have been satisfied with the Jehnerts under the seats without a sub, but I doubt it. The trunk sub adds a huge dimension to the sound, even at low volumes. If I was doing it over again I'd have factored a trunk sub into my plans from the beginning, but other than the fact that I went over budget on this project I really don't mind, as I am quite happy with the system I have now.

Still have to get the sub mounted in a corner enclosure. Right now it is in a big box taking up half my trunk. Gonna put it in one of these:

Just make sure that whatever sub you got or plan on getting, the box is made by its specs. If not you will get some distortion and might end up unsatisfied again. I have a kicker L7 12 and have it in an enclosed box made to its specs and it's pretty good and does not take that much room. I don't really use my trunk for big stuff anyways so im good lol

That looks like a great sub location! My car has the split folding rear seats, hence the corner mount for me.

I went a whole different route, but knew going in that true "sub" frequencies will suffer a bit.

I refused to compromise trunk space. With what little of it I had, I was keeping every little bit of it I could.

So in my case, I had 2 choices:
1) Jehnert 8" under seats
or
2) Jehnert door boards.

Neither will please someone looking for true "sub" frequencies, but the door boards were an awesome solution to my preferences.

ATTENTION! !!
For anyone looking for the ultimate sub and don't want to compromise trunk space! My buddy is selling his MOREL MW9 these speakers are rated 1000 watts peaks at only 160 rms so you don't need a big amp to push this things. His asking $800 a pair shipped. These speakers run for $500 ea. And they are Brand New In Box! He just sold me his Morel Hybrid Integra 402 for a great price. Pm me for details on contacting him

Those Morel Elates are very nice but they will NOT replace a subwoofer. Are some damn fine midbass speakers though!

Good stuff dude!

This thread is making me want to throw a corner sub in my E92 trunk lol..! I needz more beatdownnn =) the stock L7 is good, but not enough for me.. I'm coming from two JL 10w6's in my Honda Civic Hatchback which produced outrageous boom, to the stock L7 in my e92 which leaves me wanting way more boom.. I semi-produce hip-hop music and love to hear some of my home-made beats pounding, it's a cool feeling..
