Hi guys,

I've currently got Bridgestone runflats on my e93. 225/40/r19 (i think) at the front and 255/35/r19 at the rear. the rear ones are terribly worn and needs replacing. The ride quality with runflats is absolutely shocking, literally. So i thought i'd go for just normal non run-flat tyres this time. After having had a look on tyreleader i came aross these Nexen tyres which seems good value for money and they have some good reviews, any experiences from these tyres?

Also, would it cause problems by having 2 rear tyres with different tread as the 2 front ones?

I would say that virtually ANY mid-market tyre would be far superior to runflats. I have had a set of Falken FK452's; tyres were fine, but they were really noisy during the last 5-10,000 miles of their life - bit like if a wheel bearing had gone.

I have also had a set of Hankook Ventus and they were fine. Handling OK an no noise issues.

I would not buy too cheap a tyre, but IMO there is no need to go to the premium brands unless you have deep pockets (or a company car).

Go onto the Event Tyres website and look at their mid-market brands. I would just pick virtually any of those.

I don't think the different tread front and back is a biggie for normal driving but as always I stand to be corrected. I would have thought it was inevitable as the rears wear faster than the fronts.

My trusted tyre fitter is sponsored by Nexen, he pushes them quite a lot. However, on his 5 series, he uses them only on the front and has Pirellis for his rears. He recommended the same for me but I went Pirelli all round. I had a bad experience with budgets years ago, not that Nexen are budget as such. Since then I get premium all round. A little bit extra spent for complete peace of mind is how I see it.

That's not the right sizes for E9x cars.

They should be 225/35x19 for the front and 255/30x19 on the rear.

I don't know much about Nexen tyres, but read mixed reviews on them.

If you are buying 4 new tyres, I'd be looking to buy 4 of he same tyres.

It'll cost around £200 extra to have a premium tyre like Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 2.

I see no point in trying to save a few quid on budget tyres.

Tyres should last long enough that £200 difference is such a small difference over the life of the tyres.

Nexen is the worst you can have.
I had them on non-bmw car and wet grip was a joke.
When you are considering mid budget tyres, 4 pot / 6 pot means a lot.
Altenzo (Australian rubber) is good for 4 pots but for 6 pots minimum falken or hankook.
Avoid NEXEN.

I had kumho on my 6pot and they did well to deal with 600nm. 8/10 imho.

I'm running NEXEN WINGUARD Sports on my mapped 335d without much issue. Granted they are the NEXEN winter tyres but grip so far has been good dry or wet. I can break traction if I try hard enough but I could do that with the former Michelin Pilot Sports too. I've had the nexens on ice, frost and a touch of snow and they've stood up really well so far.

A good friend of mine works at a michelin sponsored garage and they're still mostly running Nexens on the staff cars apparently for the price there isn't much better you can get. I paid £280 for 4 brand new 18" winter tyres more than half the price of a top brand.

Not sure about nexen but i have nankang ns2's fitted to my m359 reps.

235/35/19 on a 9j front
265/30/19 on a 10j rear

Both have a little stretch but have to say for £350 all in for 4 tires i couldnt say ive had much better, and ive had toyo t888, t1r's all the top brands and these are no different even in the wet and ice have been absolutely fine, ive pushed the car aswel on all conditions to test the tires and there superb i cant fault them, really nice tread pattern aswel.

I always have to have 4 of the same tires as i dont like looking at different tire and writing on the side wall

I have just shod my new 19" wheels with Kumho, and so far so good. No Excessive noise, Have not tested the wet grip whilst fast driving but normal wet driving seems reliable.

For the price I got these on Tyreleaders I saved an enormous amount of money which put together with the sale of the 18" wheels allowed me to purchase the new wheels in the first place!

The math for me was a simple one and the tyre choice so far I have been very pleased with!

PS: Came from having Vred Sessanta on my M3 which where brilliant!

I test drove an E90 during the summer and it was the worst handling BMW i have ever driven, it was on the point of being dangerous. The dealer looked into it and said the there was nothing actually wrong with the car and it was probably due to the Nexen tyres which they had fitted.

I was previously running Goodyear Assym 2's, and then Falken 452's, and the Nexens don't feel any different in my opinion.

I'm running 265/30/19 rear, 235/35/19 front. Have done roughly 6000 miles on them, no visible signs of wear as yet.

Maybe that tells a story why you can't feel any difference. You are quite clearly driving well within the performance of the car.

6000 miles with some spirited driving will always result in tyre wear, unless they last 100,000 miles.

I have used Nexens previouly on my mapped 2.8T Signum and they we terrible for grip, then started using Nankangs which were fine but kept getting blow outs. I then went onto Kumho's and they have been fine. I replaced the run flats on the e92 with Kunho's and so far so good

That sounds like dealer passing the buck from something mechanical. They are not the best tyres out there, but I seriously doubt it affected your test drive that much.........

Currently have Nexen Winguard Sport fitted as my winter tyres and they're ok, for summer tyres I have Goodyear Asyms 2s up front and Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas at the rear.

coz my 2 front tyres still got quite a lot of tread so i will probs try these budget tyres out and then change all 4 for better ones once they wear out if i find the budgets no good.

On my stage 2 335d I don't want to get run flats nor top of the range, I go go if you like ' mid range', 2 tyres fall into this category fk453s and rainsport (actually little cheaper) wet grip good, dry grip doesn't really loose traction with 370 odd bhp and loads of torque, little bit of noise wear so far half worn with 6k.

I currently have Nexens on the rear of my D3 (they were on it when I bought it) and they're garbage. Dry grip is 'OK'; wet grip is non-existent.

If you're after 'mid-range' tyres, I'd go for Vredestein's. Ran them for 4 years on my R32 and they were brilliant in wet and dry. Considering them for the D3 but I'm impressed with the Conti's that are on the front.

the issue i find with "mid range" tyres, is that they are a complete false economy.

they grip alright, but they achieve that grip by being very soft, as a result you are lucky to get them to last 10-15k.

compare that to a premium brand, which might be 20-25£ more expensive, and they last twice as long, while providing better grip. we have had multiple sets of Goodyear Eagle F1 Assym2's last for 30k miles, without being completely worn out either.

show me some Falkens or Rainsports that will do the same, its not going to happen.

I would change all 4 at the same time don't think it's a good idea to have non runflats on the rear and normal tyres on the front but stand to be corrected.
