Brakes Advice OEM or Not
Hello All,
I have a 2007 335i that finally needs brakes after 95k miles!!! Now I do not need greater braking power, OEM was fine, however the rotors did start to warp this last year which could be expected. I am debating between 1) OEM rotors pads 2) Zimmerman Rotors and Texar Pads. I do not mind going after market if they are just as good. What is your advice? Thank you - Luigi

In your situation, I don't think you'll have any loss going with Zimmerman rotors and Textar pads.
Textar is an OE supplier for BMW, so if you were to purchase the "OEM BMW" pads, you very well may receive identical Textar pads with an additional BMW logo stamped on. I'd save a few $ and go with the 2nd option, as you won't be compromising anything.

I highly recommend ECS Geomet rotors, not that expensive, better look, and they do not rust.

I went from oem rotors/pads, to oem rotors/Hawk HPS pads.
I actually prefer the bite of the oem pads over the HPS. But the oem pads do give off a lot more brake dust. |

Centric or Zimmerman rotors are really the only way to go IMO.
They pretty much make all the rotors that other companies rebrand. Pads is more debatable... depends what you want. I like the feel of the OEM bite, and don't mind the brake dust, so I went with OEM Textar pads. If you hate brake dust, there are obviously other pads that will give you less, usually with less performance. Many of the performance pads out there, have less initial bite than OEM, but much more linear braking. I would absolutely stay away from "drilled" or "slotted" rotors... they might look "cool" but that is about the only "benefit" you will actually get from them. Especially if you are just DD/street driving your car. DD/Street driving vs. tracking or occasional tracking, obviously is another thing to consider.

Thank you all for the post. I decided to go with the Zimmerman Rotors and Textar pads. I read only good things on them. I had ZimmerMan rotors before on my volvo and had good experience as well. I will provide an update once I get them on.

In the same boat. I was looking at r1concepts. Most likely will buy them in the spring since it ends up being almost same or less than OEM i think. Just make sure you buy a no rust rotor for both hub and rotor itself. I never thought the hub mattered much until I got my more recent summer setup. Now I can see the ugly OEM hub thats discolored.

Zimmerman are coated and do not rust. I just do not know what they are coated with... lol

Got fed up with the dust on OEM, went with Zimmerman and akebono. Never look back IMO the set up is greatly priced and works awesome. Brake power is a bit less but I have no issue with it and hey no brake dust!.

I would second the Hawk HPS pad recommendation. We install tons of them to good effect. They are a little more consistent after heavy repeated use, and are much less dusty than the stock pads.
One note about low dust ceramic pads: their bite is generally much worse than a stock pad or high performance pad like the HPS. |
